Talking To Your Parrot

Parrots are naturally very sensitive to the world around them. Their strong awareness of changes in their surroundings helps them stay alert and avoid possible dangers in the wild. Because of this instinct, parrots can quickly notice the emotions, moods, and energy levels of the people around them, especially their owners and the atmosphere of their home.

Understanding this natural behavior can help us build better relationships with pet parrots. When we learn how wild birds think and respond, we can use that knowledge to create a calmer and more comfortable environment for the parrots living with us.

How Your Energy Influences Your Parrot’s Behavior

Have you ever noticed that when you stand near your parrot and act excited, playful, or energetic, your bird may begin moving around, bouncing on the perch, and making more sounds? On the other hand, when you approach calmly and speak in a gentle voice, your parrot may tilt its head, focus on you, and listen carefully.

The mood and activity level inside the home can have a major impact on a parrot’s behavior. When the environment becomes loud, stressful, or overwhelming, sometimes the best solution is simply to lower the energy around the bird. A quiet conversation can often help restore a sense of calm.

For example, when my umbrella cockatoo Linus becomes ready for his afternoon vocal sessions, I can usually reduce his noise by standing nearby and speaking softly to him.

Using Calm Communication to Stop Excessive Screaming

Even when Linus is already in the middle of a loud screaming episode, I can often help him settle down by staying in front of him and continuing to speak in a quiet, relaxed voice.

He may not actually hear my words because of his own volume, but he can still see me and sense my calm behavior. Eventually, his energy level begins to match mine, and my peaceful attitude gradually influences him.

This shows how powerful our presence and emotional state can be when interacting with parrots.

Encouraging Play Through Positive Energy

The same idea can also be used in the opposite way. If you have a parrot that spends most of its time sitting quietly and avoiding activity, adding some excitement can encourage movement and exercise.

Playing music, dancing, singing, or showing enthusiasm during playtime may inspire a less active bird to join in. Many parrots are naturally cautious around unfamiliar objects or experiences. However, because they trust their owners, they often become more confident when they see their human companion showing excitement and approval.

When your parrot sees that something is safe and enjoyable through your reaction, it becomes easier for the bird to accept new experiences.

Talking Helps Build Trust and Security

Speaking with your parrot serves many important purposes. For a newly adopted bird, regular conversation helps create trust and strengthens the bond between bird and owner. As you continue communicating with patience and kindness, your parrot learns that you are a safe and reliable companion.

Once your bird feels comfortable, you can also show that you are not only trustworthy but also a source of fun and positive experiences.

Talking to your parrot can also help prepare it for upcoming changes. For example, if you are planning a trip and your bird will temporarily stay at a boarding facility, explaining the situation ahead of time can help reduce stress.

Although your parrot may not understand every word, the familiar sound of your voice can provide reassurance that everything will be okay.

Reassuring Your Parrot During Changes

When preparing your bird for a major change, continue reminding your parrot that it is loved and cared for. Tell your bird how special, beautiful, and wonderful it is.

The more time you spend talking, explaining, and offering reassurance, the more prepared your parrot may feel when facing a new situation.

Some people may think this sounds unnecessary or unusual, but many experienced parrot owners and experts recognize the value of this type of communication. Parrots may not understand the exact meaning of human language, but they are highly responsive to tone, emotion, and intention.

Your voice helps strengthen the connection between you and your bird and can provide comfort during situations that might otherwise feel frightening or stressful.

Creating a Stronger Bond With Your Parrot

Parrots that regularly benefit from an owner’s attention and conversation often feel more included as part of the family. Talking with your bird helps improve trust, strengthens your relationship, and contributes to a happier and more confident companion.

By taking the time to communicate with your parrot every day, you are not only teaching your bird that you are a friend—you are also helping create a healthier, more enjoyable life together.

The Lone Tree of Lake Vrnwy

The Lone Tree of Lake Vrnwy

One return trip to one of Wales’s most breathtaking lakes led me to a discovery that might rival the famous tree standing on Llyn Padarn. On the borders of Snowdonia National Park, just south of Lake Bala, lies Lake Vyrnwy—nestled among the remote and rugged Berwyn Mountains, flanked by waterfalls, open countryside untouched by modern development. It’s a place you won’t forget, though arriving at 3 a.m. makes the beauty hard to see at first.
