From crystal-clear alpine lakes to powerful rivers, Washington offers countless ways to enjoy the water. For travelers hoping to relax in warm mineral waters and experience the calming effects of hot springs, developed soaking destinations provide the perfect combination of nature, comfort, and convenience. Whether you’re enjoying a private soaking tub overlooking the landscape on Orcas Island or relaxing in outdoor pools surrounded by Olympic Peninsula forests, Washington’s hot spring resorts offer unforgettable escapes.

Although the state has many natural hot springs, many are located in remote areas and can be difficult to reach. Some also become crowded during peak seasons. For those who want a peaceful experience with extra comforts, these carefully developed soaking destinations are among the best places to unwind in Washington.

TenZen Springs & Cabins, Columbia River Gorge

Located high above the Columbia River Gorge, TenZen Springs & Cabins is an adults-only retreat designed for visitors looking for privacy and a peaceful connection with nature. The property opened in 2022 after its owners spent years visiting nearby hot springs before purchasing land connected to geothermal waters from the Wind River.

This small retreat features only six modern cabins, creating an intimate atmosphere. Each cabin includes a comfortable king-size bed, a kitchenette, and a private soaking area. The wooden two-person tubs are supplied with natural hot spring water transported from the nearby river, and guests can control the temperature according to their preferences.

Guests can also enjoy private outdoor decks and open-air showers while surrounded by the quiet beauty of the gorge.

Sustainability is an important part of the resort’s design. After each stay, the soaking tubs are emptied and sanitized. The used hot spring water is filtered and returned underground through an injection well, allowing it to naturally flow back into the aquifer and continue the heating cycle.

Carson Hot Springs, Columbia River Gorge

Carson Hot Springs Resort is one of Washington’s historic soaking destinations, offering a charming atmosphere with a classic early-20th-century feel. Located in the Columbia River Gorge, the resort’s original bathhouse features traditional clawfoot tubs filled with geothermal water from the nearby Wind River.

Visitors can enjoy individual soaking tubs where they can adjust the water temperature themselves, or choose larger communal soaking pools. The resort also offers a jetted tub for a modern spa-style experience and a cold-water pool for guests who enjoy alternating hot and cold treatments.

Day visitors can reserve soaking sessions during designated hours, while overnight guests receive access through their accommodations. Travelers who prefer more privacy can choose rooms with private balcony hot tubs for a more relaxing experience.

Sol Duc Hot Springs, Olympic Peninsula

Hidden within the spectacular landscapes of Olympic National Park, Sol Duc Hot Springs is one of Washington’s most famous soaking destinations. Surrounded by old-growth forests, waterfalls, and mountain scenery, the resort provides a unique way to experience the natural beauty of the Olympic Peninsula.

Although the pools themselves are constructed, the mineral-rich water comes from natural underground processes. Rain and snowmelt travel through layers of rock, absorbing minerals before rising back to the surface.

Visitors can use the pools by staying at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort or purchasing a visitor soaking pass. Reservations are recommended, and each session lasts about 90 minutes. Guests can enjoy several pools with temperatures ranging from approximately 99 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Accommodation options include lodge rooms, cabins, and a nearby campground with both tent and RV spaces. The resort typically operates from late March through early November.

For a quieter experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during spring and autumn when fewer travelers are present.

Doe Bay Resort & Retreat, Orcas Island

Located on beautiful Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands, Doe Bay Resort & Retreat offers a peaceful wellness experience featuring ocean views, outdoor soaking tubs, a sauna, outdoor showers, and a relaxing creekside deck.

The resort’s pools are not fed by geothermal springs, but the saltwater soaking pools are maintained at around 104 degrees, creating a soothing spa-like environment. Overnight stays are required to use the spa facilities, and guests can choose between shared soaking periods or private spa sessions for an additional cost.

Visitors can stay in cabins, yurts, domes, or campsites. The property also includes a small market, a shared guest kitchen, and a farm-to-table cafĂ© that uses fresh ingredients grown in the resort’s own garden.

Because Orcas Island requires transportation by ferry or seaplane, advance planning is recommended. Ferry reservations can fill quickly during summer. Spring and fall offer comfortable weather with fewer visitors, while winter provides a quiet atmosphere for a peaceful soaking getaway.

Soap Lake Natural Spa & Resort, Soap Lake

Located in Eastern Washington, Soap Lake is famous for its mineral-rich waters and unique natural environment. The lake was formed during the Ice Age and contains a variety of minerals that have attracted visitors seeking a relaxing wellness experience for generations.

The warmest months, especially July and August, are the busiest times to visit. However, many people enjoy swimming in the lake from late spring through autumn.

Soap Lake Resort provides one of the easiest ways to experience the lake’s mineral waters. Guests can choose from different accommodations featuring standard tubs or private jetted tubs. Water from the lake is delivered directly to guest rooms, allowing visitors to enjoy the mineral benefits in complete privacy.

The in-room tubs function like regular bathtubs, with adjustable temperatures and the option to add fresh water. Guests can also access the lake from the resort’s private beach, where a freshwater hot tub and sauna are available.

Visiting Washington’s Undeveloped Hot Springs

Washington is home to many wild hot springs, but reaching them often requires hiking through remote areas. While these natural locations can be beautiful, they may lack basic facilities and can sometimes contain safety concerns, including exposure to harmful bacteria.

In recent years, several undeveloped hot springs have experienced increasing visitor numbers, resulting in overcrowding, damage, and environmental problems. Popular destinations such as Goldmyer Hot Springs and Scenic Hot Springs have introduced reservation systems or visitor restrictions to help protect these fragile areas.

Choosing developed hot spring resorts is often the best way to enjoy Washington’s thermal waters while reducing environmental impact and supporting responsible tourism.

For those who visit undeveloped hot springs, following Leave No Trace principles is essential. Carry out all trash, avoid damaging natural surroundings, and leave the area exactly as you found it. Since many remote hot springs are located far from services, visitors should check weather forecasts, road conditions, trail information, and always tell someone their travel plans before heading out.
