Black-billed magpies (Pica hudsonia) are common across Alberta and many parts of western Canada. Although some people consider them troublesome because of their fearless, curious, and sometimes playful behavior, these birds are actually among the most remarkable species in the bird world.
There are around 18 species of magpies found around the globe, but the black-billed magpie is the only species native to Canada. These birds belong to the Corvidae family, which also includes crows, ravens, and jays. Members of this family are widely recognized for their impressive intelligence, and magpies provide many examples of these advanced abilities.
Social Lives and Nest Building
Black-billed magpies are highly social birds and typically form lifelong pairs. Both male and female partners work together to construct their nests.
Building a nest can take as long as 40 days. Their nests have a distinctive dome-like structure, which helps protect eggs and young birds from predators approaching from above.
Their strong social bonds and cooperative behaviors are only part of what makes magpies unusual. Researchers continue to discover new examples of their remarkable intelligence.
Exceptional Intelligence and Self-Recognition
One of the most impressive discoveries about magpies is their ability to recognize themselves in mirrors.
Mirror self-recognition is considered a sign of advanced cognitive ability and has previously been observed in only a small number of animals, including great apes, bottlenose dolphins, orcas, elephants, and humans older than about 18 months.
This ability suggests that magpies possess a level of self-awareness that is rare among animals.
Magpies Are Skilled Mimics
Black-billed magpies are excellent at copying sounds from their surroundings. They can imitate the calls of other birds, noises made by mammals, human voices, and even non-living sounds.
Their intelligence also allows them to recognize individual human faces. In one study, researchers tested this ability by having two people wear identical clothing, and the magpies were still able to distinguish between them.
This remarkable recognition skill shows how observant and adaptable these birds can be.
Magpie “Funerals” and Complex Behaviors
One of the most unusual behaviors observed in black-billed magpies is what some researchers describe as a “funeral.”
When a magpie encounters another dead magpie, it may make loud calls that attract nearby members of its species. Groups of up to 40 magpies may gather around the body and vocalize together for 10 to 15 minutes.
Observers have also reported seeing magpies leave the area and return carrying pieces of grass, which they place beside the dead bird. This behavior has drawn comparisons to mourning rituals seen in humans.
Although scientists continue to study the meaning behind this behavior, it demonstrates the complex social responses and emotional possibilities of these intelligent birds.
Advanced Learning Abilities
Magpies are also capable of understanding relationships between familiar objects and new, unfamiliar objects. This ability is known as abstract concept learning.
Abstract thinking is uncommon among many animal species and highlights the advanced problem-solving skills of magpies.
A Remarkable Bird Found Across Alberta
Black-billed magpies are much more than noisy or mischievous backyard visitors. Their intelligence, memory, social behaviors, and ability to adapt make them truly extraordinary birds.
Across Alberta, these fascinating creatures can often be observed in open landscapes and urban areas. Spending time watching them reveals just how clever and impressive these birds really are.

The Evolution of Digital Earth: From Al Gore’s Vision to the Next Generation
The concept of a Digital Earth—a comprehensive digital replica of our planet—was popularized by a 1998 speech by Al Gore. This vision catalyzed the creation of first-generation virtual globes, most notably Google Earth. These platforms revolutionized how the public and scientists interact with geographic information by making complex planetary data accessible through a "free, fast, and fun" interface. Unlike traditional Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which require specialized knowledge of map projections and scales, virtual globes utilize intuitive metaphors like "flying" to navigate the world.

Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary: A Birthday Weekend at Alpine Lakes High Camp
For as long as I can remember, Jasper has called weekend getaways “holidays.” The second I start packing his overnight bag, he bounces over, eyes wide: “Are we going on a holiday?” Once we’re in the car, he announces proudly, “We are going on an adventure!” In his short life, Jasper has already checked off more adventures than many people do in a lifetime—hiking in Norway, cruising past Icelandic glaciers, kayaking in the ocean—and now, staying in an alpine hut joins that list. As parents of a young child, it’s tempting to leave him with grandparents when we travel. But in the end, he always adds an extra layer of joy, creativity, and pure happiness to our trips. At Alpine Lakes High Camp, Jasper threw himself into every moment: strutting around the grounds like a tiny explorer, curling up on the cabin bed with a stack of books, and tracing fresh snow tracks with his boots. On the drive home, he summed it up perfectly: “Let’s go back to the cabin!”

7 Vital Functions of Coral Reefs
Coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” are among the most remarkable ecosystems on the planet. Although they cover less than 0.1% of Earth’s surface, these underwater cities burst with life and diversity. Stretching across tropical waters, they host thousands of fish, plants, and invertebrates, while also shaping the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. Beyond their beauty, coral reefs perform critical functions that support both marine life and human society.

Monstera Deliciosa: A Beloved Houseplant
My first plant profile goes to my all-time favorite plant, Monstera deliciosa. This is the plant that sparked my passion for greenery and began my journey into the world of plants. It will always have a special place in my collection. Commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant because of the natural holes and splits in its leaves, monstera became especially popular during the middle of the 20th century and has recently returned as one of the most fashionable houseplants.
