My first plant profile goes to my all-time favorite plant, Monstera deliciosa. This is the plant that sparked my passion for greenery and began my journey into the world of plants. It will always have a special place in my collection. Commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant because of the natural holes and splits in its leaves, monstera became especially popular during the middle of the 20th century and has recently returned as one of the most fashionable houseplants.

The recognizable monstera leaf pattern can now be seen everywhere, appearing on home decorations, clothing, shoes, curtains, and many other designs. The plant has even gained a dedicated following online through trends such as #monsteramonday on Instagram. Its popularity is easy to understand because monstera is not only beautiful but also tough, adaptable, and surprisingly easy for beginners to grow.

Biology of Monstera Deliciosa

Monstera deliciosa originates from Mexico and naturally grows in tropical regions, including places such as Hawaii and Florida where it climbs trees in warm environments. It is classified as an epiphyte, which means it grows on other plants while producing aerial roots. Similar plants include orchids and air plants. These aerial roots help the monstera collect nutrients from its surroundings and provide support as it attaches itself to trees.

Monstera belongs to the Araceae family, making it related to popular indoor plants such as peace lilies, pothos, and heartleaf philodendrons. Under ideal growing conditions, the plant can produce flowers. Its bloom consists of a spadix, a cone-like structure covered with tiny flowers, surrounded by a protective sheath called a spathe. The flower structure is very similar to that of a peace lily.

In its natural habitat, monstera can also produce edible fruit, although indoor plants rarely reach this stage. The fruit is commonly consumed in Mexico and is often described as having a flavor similar to pineapple.

Lighting Requirements

Monstera deliciosa is a flexible plant that can survive in different lighting conditions, but it grows best with bright, indirect sunlight. The amount of light it receives directly affects the size and appearance of its leaves. With stronger indirect light, monstera leaves usually become larger and develop more splits and holes.

These openings are called fenestrations. In nature, they help the plant handle strong winds by allowing air to pass through the leaves more easily. Monsteras grown in lower light can still produce new leaves, but those leaves may remain smaller and may not develop the famous fenestrations that make the plant so recognizable.

If your monstera becomes tall and stretched out or produces small leaves without splits, it may need more light. Increasing natural light exposure or adding artificial grow lighting can help. However, avoid intense direct sunlight because it can burn the foliage.

Watering Needs

One of the reasons monstera is popular among plant owners is its ability to tolerate occasional neglect. It is a relatively forgiving plant and can handle missed waterings better than many other houseplants.

Allow the upper portion of the soil, around the first 2 inches, to dry before watering again. When watering, soak the soil thoroughly and make sure the container has proper drainage. Pots without drainage holes can lead to water buildup and root problems.

Soil can become compacted over time, so gently loosening or aerating it occasionally helps improve airflow and allows water to reach the roots more effectively. If the leaves begin to droop, the plant may need water. Regular tap water is usually acceptable, though rainwater or distilled water can also be excellent choices.

Humidity and Temperature

Because Monstera deliciosa comes from tropical forests, it prefers warm temperatures and higher humidity similar to its natural environment. However, it is adaptable and can grow well in normal household conditions.

If your home has very dry air, increasing humidity around the plant can improve growth. This can be done through methods such as using a humidifier or placing the plant in a naturally more humid area.

Monsteras can tolerate temperatures down to around 60°F, but they should be protected from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, especially from air conditioning vents. During warmer months, they can enjoy being outdoors in a shaded location as long as they are protected from harsh direct sunlight.

Soil and Fertilizer

A rich, nutrient-filled potting mix works well for Monstera deliciosa. High-quality houseplant soils are usually sufficient, but creating a custom mix can provide even better growing conditions.

A suitable blend may include 30% potting soil, 20% peat moss, 40% orchid bark, and 10% perlite. Additional materials such as charcoal or finely shredded sphagnum moss can also be added. The goal is to create soil that drains efficiently while still holding enough moisture to keep the roots healthy without becoming waterlogged.

During the active growing season in spring and summer, monstera benefits from a balanced fertilizer every two to four weeks. In autumn and winter, feeding can be reduced to once a month or every other month, especially if growth slows. Since monstera is naturally a fast-growing plant, it often responds well to regular nutrients.

Repotting Monstera

Repotting is needed when roots begin growing above the soil surface or appear through the drainage holes. When moving the plant to a new container, choose one that is about 2 to 4 inches larger than the current pot.

Repotting is also an ideal opportunity to provide climbing support, such as a moss pole or trellis. In the wild, monstera naturally climbs upward using trees for support, so giving it something to grow against encourages healthier and more natural growth.

Without support, mature monstera plants can become large and difficult to manage. Providing a structure for climbing helps maintain its shape and allows the plant to display its impressive foliage more beautifully.

Ancient Pyramids Around the World

Ancient Pyramids Around the World

Egypt contains over a hundred pyramids, yet this one marks the beginning of them all. It was constructed during the rule of Pharaoh Djoser (around 2630–2611 B.C.) as a monumental burial structure. Earlier royal tombs were simple flat structures made of mudbrick, but architect Imhotep introduced a groundbreaking idea: stacking six limestone tiers of decreasing size to form a “step pyramid” rising about 200 feet. Imhotep, who was also associated with healing, was later honored as a divine figure in later traditions.
