Top Ten Experiences in Arches
Drive Arches Scenic Drive. The main thoroughfare through the park, Arches Scenic Drive, stretches 19 miles and serves as the gateway to most of the park’s top attractions. Many of the must-see sights lie directly along this road or are just a short detour down access roads, making it easy to soak in the beauty without straying far.
Hike through Park Avenue. This gentle, 1-mile one-way trail meanders past colossal rock formations, including the Three Gossips and the Courthouse Towers. As you walk, the towering sandstone walls create a sense of being in a grand urban canyon, hence the name offering a unique perspective on the park’s geological wonders.
See Balanced Rock. A short stroll around this famous formation is a highlight for many visitors. You’ll pass it while driving the main road, but it’s well worth pulling over for a closer look. A brief loop trail circles the base of Balanced Rock, letting you admire its precarious beauty from every angle—how does that massive boulder stay perched so perfectly?
Watch the Sunset at Delicate Arch. Delicate Arch is the park’s crown jewel, and reaching it requires lacing up your hiking boots for a 3-mile round-trip trek over slickrock and sandy paths. The effort is rewarded, especially at sunset, when the setting sun bathes the arch in a warm, golden glow, turning it into a fiery masterpiece against the sky.
Visit the Windows and Turret Arch. These popular arches are best explored via an easy loop trail less than 1 mile long, making them accessible to almost all visitors. The Windows, North Window and South Window, are massive, frame-like structures, while Turret Arch adds a smaller, more intricate counterpart, creating a trio of wonders in one spot.
Double Arch. The tallest arch in the park, Double Arch is a striking formation where two arches share a common stone base. A short walk brings you right to its base, and it’s one of the few places in the park where you can climb on the rocks beneath the arch. Fans of cinema might recognize it from the iconic final scenes of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Devils Garden Trail. For the ultimate adventure, tackle the 8-mile loop of the Devils Garden Trail. Along the way, you’ll encounter eight distinct arches, clamber over giant sandstone fins, and test your navigation skills on primitive sections of the path. It’s a rugged, rewarding hike that showcases the raw, untamed beauty of the park.
Visit Sand Dune Arch. Tucked between towering sandstone fins, Sand Dune Arch offers a different vibe from the park’s other arches. Reaching it requires a short, easy walk over soft, sandy trails, and the sheltered space beneath the arch feels like a hidden oasis and perfect for escaping the sun or enjoying a quiet moment.
Take a Tour of the Fiery Furnace. Named for the intense red hue it glows with at sunset, the Fiery Furnace is a labyrinth of sandstone canyons and fins, one of the park’s most unique non-arch attractions. The best way to explore it is on a ranger-led hike: this 2-mile strenuous trek weaves through narrow passages and hidden corners, offering a sense of discovery around every bend.
Enjoy the Panoramic Views from the Garden of Eden. This area, with its knobby hoodoos and jumbled sandstone formations, is a delight in itself, but its real draw is the sweeping panorama it offers. From here, you can take in vast stretches of Arches National Park, with the snow-capped La Sal Mountains rising in the distance, a postcard-perfect view that captures the park’s grandeur.
When To Visit Arches National Park
The ideal times to visit are spring (March through May) and fall (mid-September through November), when temperatures are mild, ranging from comfortable daytime highs to cool evenings. These seasons offer perfect conditions for hiking and sightseeing, with fewer crowds than the summer rush.
Summer brings scorching heat, with temperatures often exceeding 100°F. If you visit during this time, plan outdoor activities for early mornings or late afternoons, and take breaks during the midday heat to avoid heat exhaustion. Pack plenty of water and sunscreen, protection from the sun is a must.
Winter can be chilly, with January highs averaging around 42°F and freezing nights. Snow is possible from November to February, but the weather is generally dry with clear skies, making for crisp, quiet visits. Just be prepared for cold temperatures and possible icy trails.
Our personal favorite time to visit is October, when the weather is pleasant, and crowds thin out compared to summer. For a balance of decent weather and low visitor numbers, November and March are also excellent choices. Arches even shines in the off-season, earning a spot in our guide to the best U.S. national parks to visit in January, March, November, and December.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Arches?
One full day is enough to hit the highlights, though it will be a busy itinerary packed with driving, hiking, and quick stops. You’ll get to see the most famous arches and soak in the park’s essence, but you’ll be on the move.
Two days let you slow down: spread out the hikes, join a ranger-guided tour of the Fiery Furnace, and linger at your favorite spots. You’ll also have time to explore some of the lesser-known, quieter arches that don’t make the top 10 lists—hidden gems that offer a more intimate experience of the park’s beauty.
Delicate Arch
Delicate Arch is more than just an icon—it’s one of the most recognizable geological structures on the planet. Photos don’t do it justice: the opening beneath the arch stands 46 feet high, making it the largest free-standing arch in the park. It’s only when you see someone standing beneath it (or stand there yourself) that you grasp its true scale.
This arch played a role in history, too: during the 2002 Winter Olympics, the Olympic torch was carried beneath it, linking ancient natural beauty with a global moment of celebration.
If the 3-mile hike feels daunting, you can still catch a glimpse of Delicate Arch from a distance at the Lower and Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoints. These spots offer a panoramic view of the arch against the landscape, perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed experience.
Conclusion
Arches National Park is a testament to the power of time and nature, where wind, water, and sand have carved a landscape unlike any other. From the iconic Delicate Arch to the hidden corners of the Fiery Furnace, every inch of this park tells a story of geological transformation. Whether you’re driving the scenic route, hiking a short trail, or tackling the rugged Devils Garden loop, Arches offers something for every type of explorer. With its manageable size and wealth of wonders, it’s easy to see why this park captures the hearts of visitors year after year. So pack your water bottle, lace up your boots, and get ready to be amazed—Arches National Park is waiting to show you its stone-cold beauty.

Sunflower: History, Uses, and Plant Details
Sunflower is the leading oilseed crop in Europe and North America, where it was originally domesticated and cultivated during the first millennium B.C. Native Americans utilized various parts of wild sunflowers for medicinal and culinary purposes. Initially, sunflowers were mainly spread worldwide as decorative plants. The crop became a crucial oilseed globally after Russian breeders developed the Mammoth Russian variety around 1860, which increased the size of the flower heads and boosted the seed oil content from 28% to nearly 50%. These improved varieties were later reintroduced to the United States in 1893. Over the past 3,000 years, the size of sunflower seeds has grown by 1,000%.
