A Mythical Icon: Half Lion, Half Fish

Featuring the head of a lion and the body of a fish, this cherished emblem has captivated artists and poets alike. The Merlion’s piscine form represents Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village named Temasek—a term derived from the Malay word “tasek,” meaning lake. The lion head signifies the ancient name of the city, Singapura, which translates to “Lion City” in Sanskrit.

The History of the Merlion Statue

Gushing water from its mouth, the Merlion statue rises 8.6 meters tall and weighs 70 tons. It was originally situated at the entrance of the Singapore River, crafted by local sculptor Lim Nang Seng and designed by Kwan Sai Kheong. The statue was officially revealed by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on September 15, 1972.
After the construction of the Esplanade Bridge in 1997, the statue became partially obscured from the waterfront and was subsequently moved to Merlion Park. Its current location in front of the Fullerton Hotel offers stunning views of Marina Bay.

Leisure Along the Singapore River

Whether you prefer a relaxing walk by the river or a scenic ride on a traditional bumboat, the Singapore River offers a charming glimpse into the city’s evolution. From its early days as Temasek, a simple fishing village, to its development into a vital trading hub during the British colonial era, the river has played an essential role in shaping Singapore’s identity.
