Wonders of Wildlife’s Sea Turtle Center: Rescuing and Rehabilitating Endangered Turtles

Johnny Morris' Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium (WOW) in Springfield, Mo., has once again stepped up for endangered sea turtles, welcoming its fourth group of critically ill loggerheads alongside its first-ever group of green and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. The 16 cold-stunned turtles arrived on January 25 via private aircraft, part of a rescue mission coordinated by Turtles Fly Too, NOAA, the New England Aquarium, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Flown from Boston to Springfield, they were met by WOW’s expert animal care team and transported to the aquarium’s Sea Turtle Center—marking the fourth consecutive year WOW has participated in such rescue efforts, aligning with founder Johnny Morris’ vision to inspire conservation among Midwestern families.

Introduction: Welcoming Endangered Sea Turtles for Life-Saving Care

The Threat of Cold-Stunning: Why These Turtles Needed Rescue

The rescued sea turtles washed up on New England’s coast after suffering “cold-stunning,” a life-threatening condition triggered by rapid drops in water temperature. As ectothermic (cold-blooded) animals, sea turtles rely on their environment to regulate body temperature; sudden cooling leads to illnesses like pneumonia, hypothermia, and dehydration, leaving them vulnerable and unable to fend for themselves. This season alone, over 200 cold-stunned turtles have been documented in the Northeast, all requiring urgent medical intervention. WOW—named America’s Best Aquarium five times by USA Today readers and AZA-accredited—will provide specialized care and long-term rehabilitation to prepare the turtles for release back into the wild.

Customized Rehabilitation: WOW’s Expert Care for Each Turtle

Upon arrival, WOW’s Life Sciences and Veterinary teams developed personalized care plans for each turtle, based on individual health assessments. The turtles are monitored around the clock, with key recovery steps including gradual body temperature regulation, assisted feeding, and ensuring normal swimming ability—all aimed at full rehabilitation. For the first time, the program includes green and Kemp’s ridley turtles, expanding WOW’s commitment to endangered species. Over the past three years, WOW has saved 36 cold-stunned loggerheads, refining its process with support from staff and volunteers to build extensive institutional expertise. Due to their larger size, loggerheads are hard to house, making WOW—one of the few facilities with adequate space and the only Midwest rescue center for them—a critical resource. While the 16 rescued turtles are not on public display (due to their fragile state), visitors can see resident green turtles Izzy and Ms. Pam in the Open Ocean exhibit.

Beyond Release: Satellite Tracking to Protect Future Populations

After approximately 12 weeks of rehabilitation, the turtles will be released back into the ocean—a vital step for their species, as only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survive to adulthood. To enhance conservation efforts, WOW’s Sea Turtle Center is debuting state-of-the-art satellite tracking tags, funded by the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund. Two of the turtles will be tagged before release, allowing WOW and the public to monitor data like temperature, dive depth, migration routes, and swim speed. This information will be shared with global researchers to better understand turtle stranding causes and improve survival rates. “We’re developing a monitoring plan to learn why these turtles strand and how we can help,” said Mike Daniel, WOW’s Director of Animal Care, noting the program also educates audiences about sea turtle conservation.
