Lagoa das Sete Cidades

Inside a volcanic crater on São Miguel Island in Portugal’s Azores archipelago, formed around 22,000 years ago or possibly even earlier, lie the remarkable lakes of Sete Cidades. Although they are technically part of the same body of water, the lagoon looks like two distinct lakes from a distance: Lagoa Azul, or Blue Lake, and Lagoa Verde, known as Green Lake. A narrow strip of land crossed by a bridge almost divides the two sections.

The lakes are surrounded by an exceptionally lush landscape filled with ancient subtropical vegetation, laurisilva, or laurel forest, and vibrant blue hydrangeas. Together, the colorful waters and dense greenery create a striking natural scene that feels almost otherworldly.

A Natural Treasure of the Azores

The twin lakes are frequently recognized as one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders, and their reputation is well deserved. Beyond their extraordinary appearance, they form the largest body of water in the Azorean archipelago and serve as an important source of freshwater for the surrounding area.

The landscape is also deeply connected to local folklore, giving the destination an enchanting quality that goes far beyond its natural beauty. One of the best-known stories associated with the lakes tells of a forbidden romance between two young people from very different backgrounds.

The Legend of the Two Lakes

According to local legend, a beautiful princess once fell in love with a humble shepherd. Unable to openly pursue their relationship, the two secretly met among the hills surrounding Sete Cidades, where they spent time together beneath the night sky.

Their secret romance eventually came to the attention of the princess’s father, the king. Unwilling to allow his daughter to marry someone of such low social standing, he ordered the two lovers to stop seeing each other.

The princess was said to have brilliant green eyes, while the shepherd had eyes the color of blue hydrangeas. When they were forced to part, both lovers wept over their lost romance. Their tears supposedly filled two lakes: the princess’s tears created the green lake, while the shepherd’s tears became the blue lake.

Where Science Meets Folklore

Although the romantic tale remains one of the most charming parts of Sete Cidades, science offers a very different explanation for the unusual colors. The two sections are actually connected and form a single body of water. Differences in sunlight reflection and other natural conditions make one part appear blue while the other takes on a green hue.

Whether viewed through the lens of science or remembered through its centuries-old legend, Sete Cidades remains an exceptionally beautiful destination. Its peaceful waters, dense vegetation, volcanic surroundings, and romantic folklore combine to create a landscape that feels remarkably close to a fairy tale.

Visit the King’s Viewpoint

A trip to Sete Cidades would not be complete without stopping at the King’s Viewpoint. The name refers not to the stern ruler from the local legend, but to King Carlos I of Portugal.

In 1901, King Carlos I and his wife, Queen Amelia, visited this remarkable location. After taking in the sweeping views of the lakes and surrounding landscape, they reportedly considered it the most beautiful place in the Azores.

Today, the viewpoint remains one of the best places to admire Sete Cidades from above. The panoramic scenery encompasses the blue and green waters, rolling volcanic hills, and lush vegetation, making it an unforgettable stop for anyone exploring SĂŁo Miguel Island.
