This tutorial demonstrates a simple method to draw a mushroom, complete with illustrated steps and easy-to-follow instructions.

The example image above shows how the tutorial progresses from a basic line sketch to adding simple color and shading. The style of the mushroom fits well in cartoons, comic books, or video games.

Although the instructions are designed so that erasing may not be necessary, it’s still a good idea to start with a pencil and draw lightly. Once you’re satisfied with the outline, you can go over the lines to darken them.

Step 1 – Sketch the Top of the Mushroom Cap

Begin by drawing the upper part of the mushroom cap. Give it a gently curved shape, similar to the example.

Step 2 – Draw the Stem

Below the cap, draw the stem shaped like a soft “U.” This forms the foundation of the mushroom.

Step 3 – Add the Bottom Edge of the Cap

Draw a slightly curved line across the front bottom edge of the cap. Be sure it does not reach the sides completely.

Leaving small gaps on the sides will help make the cap look thick and three-dimensional. If the line stretches all the way to the edges, the cap will appear flat.

Step 4 – Draw the Background Part of the Cap

Add the portion of the cap that sits behind the stem. This helps define the mushroom’s volume and depth.

Step 5 – Add the Spots

Decorate the mushroom cap with spots. Vary their size slightly for a natural look. To emphasize the cap’s curvature, make the spots near the center more circular, while those toward the edges can be more oval.

You can also skip this step if you want your mushroom to be a plain type without spots.

Step 6 – Add Color and Shading

Color the mushroom by making the cap red and the stem a light yellow-brown. You can experiment with other colors, especially if you didn’t include spots.

Next, add shading to give the mushroom a more realistic appearance. Darken the underside of the cap, just below the curve drawn in Step 4. Shade the top and bottom of the stem as well—the top is shadowed by the cap, and the bottom by the stem itself.

You can color your mushroom using paints or colored pencils. Shadows can be added with a regular pencil.

Conclusion

Drawing a mushroom in this simplified style is straightforward and enjoyable. By carefully following the line sketch steps and adding basic color and shading, you can create a piece of artwork that is visually appealing without being overly complicated.
